Difference between iPhone 5 and iPhone 6

Key Difference: The iPhone 6 was announced in September 2014 and is the newest phone in the Apple iPhone series after the iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The iPhone 6 has a bigger screen, rounded edges, and newer hardware.

For all purposes the phone market is currently dominated by two segments: the iPhone and everything else. The iPhone is now on its sixth generation, the iPhone 6. As the number suggests the iPhone 6 was preceded by the iPhone 5 and its two later variants: iPhone 5S and 5C. In the iPhone 6, Apple has introduced many changes as compared to its previous models. As usual, some of these have gone over well with Apple consumer, while others have garnered criticism for the company.

One of the most obvious changes that the company has made is the size of the screen. While the previous phones offered a 4-inch screen, the iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen. The iPhone 6 Plus that has been announced with the iPhone 6 has an even larger screen of 5.5 inches. Apple has previously stuck to its guns and constantly offered a phone with a 4-inch screen. This change in its screen size has led to criticism from Apple consumers accusing Apple of conforming to phone screen standards as set by other manufactures. Still, despite the larger screen, the iPhone 6 has the same screen density as the iPhone 5, i.e. 326 pixels per inch.

Furthermore, the phone now has rounded edges reminiscent of Samsung phones as oppose to previous iPhones. Apple also introduced aluminium backed phones since the iPhone 5S, in an effort to address the issue of shattered backs in the previous models. The iPhone 6 is also slimmer as compared to previous models. However, the iPhone 6 has a protruding camera lens which is a high risk for scratching.

In terms of hardware, the iPhone 6 has the A8 – 64bit architecture, the latest in the line. The iPhone 5 has A6 - 32bit. The iPhone 6 has the PowerVR GX6650 GPU, whereas the iPhone 5 has PowerVR SGX543MP3 GPU. However, both have 1 GB RAM. The iPhone 6 will also come with new M8 motion coprocessor, which like the M7 is primarily aimed at fitness applications and can now distinguish between running, cycling and elevation.

The iPhone 6 also comes with NFC, the first iPhone to do so. However, this technology is limited to the newly launched Apple Pay service. This is similar to Google Wallet, which allows users to pay for things wirelessly through NFC.

The iPhone 5 had round volume buttons which have been changed to thin metal ovals in the iPhone 6. These buttons are set into a slightly recessed indent just below the silence switch. The sleep/wake button has also been moved from the top to the right of the device, which is completely new for the device.

The iPhone 6 offers a software called ‘Digital Image Stabilisation’ (DIS) which minimises camera shake that causes blurred shots. Its front facing FaceTime Camera is 1.2 megapixales which takes in 81% more light, gain HDR, improved face detection and a burst mode for better selfies. The phone also offers 1080p video recording at 30fps and 60fps (frames per second) as well as 120-240fps in slo-mo.

Also the iPhone comes is variants of 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB, getting rid of the 32 GB available in previous models. The phone also has a bigger battery as compared to the previous range. The iPhone 6 touts a 1810 mAh battery, as compared to a 1440 mAh battery of the iPhone 5.
