Difference between Comment and Remark

Key Difference: A comment is considered as an observation or a statement that expresses a fact or an opinion on a matter. A remark is actually considered as a comment. Remark is also a comment or a statement that is made regarding an issue.

The terms ‘remark’ and ‘comment’ are confusing for many people that are just learning English. It can even be confusing for those people whose native tongue is English because of the similarities between them. Even though we use these terms all the time, the moment someone asks us to explain if these are the same or different we are at a loss of words. This is commonly because we are so used to just saying these words, we don’t think much about it. The words comment and remark are actually similar; however, some people might claim that it is different because of the situations that it is used in.

A comment is considered as an observation or a statement that expresses a fact or an opinion on a matter. A comment can also be a written statement regarding specific matter. For example, after reading a book, the reader may be asked to provide a comment. The reader states, “The book was exciting in the beginning, but did not grasp my attention towards the end.” This would be considered as a comment based on the opinion of the reader. Another example would be a person walking down on the street sees a blue flower. He pauses and tells his friend to see the blue flower. This would be considered as a comment based on a fact.

Comments can also be considered as an explanation regarding an already written text or an object. For example, in computer programming, comments are added to the source code as an explanatory for that code. Comments are commonly used to refer to opinions or statements made regarding a certain subject.

A remark is actually considered as a comment. Remark is also a comment or a statement that is made regarding an issue. A remark is nothing but a statement that has been made in a specific situation or about a particular object. Many people believe that remark is different from a comment as a comment is considered to be more informal, while remark is considered to be formal. For example: The president will make a remark on the report presented to him. Others state that a remark does not need to be made about something, it can just a random or a casual statement about anything, while a comment is about a specific object or scenario. However, officially remark is considered to be a synonym of comment.
