The iPod Touch was designed to be a portable media player first, in addition to a personal digital assistant, handheld game console, and Wi-Fi mobile device. iPod Touch is essentially a step ahead of the iPod line with integrated multi-touch graphical user interface.

The iPad, on the other hand, is a tablet. Its key distinguishing features are the devices bigger multi-touch screen, a virtual keyboard Wi-Fi connectivity, and on some models, 3G cellular connectivity.

Each device has its advantage over the other. The iPod Touch offers more storage space for music and is more portable, as it is smaller in size. The iPad can shoot video, take photos, play music, send and receive email, and browse  the web, among other things. It can also be used for gaming, GPS navigation, social networking, and as an ebook reader. While, the iPod Touch can also be used for some of these features, the smaller screen makes it difficult. The iPad also has retina display, a thing that the iPod Touch does not.

Furthermore, the iPad offers more connectivity options, as it also supports 3G connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi. The iPod Touch only supports Wi-Fi. Hence, the iPad will have an internet connection on the go, whereas, the iPod Touch will only have an internet connection in the presence of a Wi-Fi hotspot. Another distinguishing factor is also the fact that the iPod Touch is comparative cheaper than the iPad.
