An apartment, also know as a flat or condo, is a self-contained housing unit, a type of residential real estate, that occupies only part of a building. The building is usually two or more floors. The multi-storied building is called an apartment building, apartment house, a block of flats, a tower block, a high-rise or a condominium. The building can have one or more apartments per floor. The hallways, stairs, and elevator are communal and are maintained by the building owner. The owner is also responsible for the building being up-to-date with fire and safety regulations. The apartments in such a building can be either bought or rented from the building owner.

An apartment usually has one or more bedrooms, a sitting area, a kitchen, and one or more bathrooms. The more number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the more luxurious the apartment is. There are many types of apartments, such as, one bedroom apartment, two bedroom apartment, three bedroom apartment, a suite, garden apartment, two-story apartment, studio apartment, etc.

The main distinction between the different types of apartments is the number of bedrooms, the features and the amenities offered. A studio apartment is a one room apartment. A one room apartment consists of a bathroom and a single room which doubles as the sitting area, bedroom and kitchen. A one bedroom apartment consists of a bedroom, a living room, and a bathroom.

The essential advantage that studio apartments have over one bedroom apartments is the rent. The studio most often than not, costs less rent than a comparing one bedroom apartment, in the same location. Also, studio apartments require less furniture to decorate due to its limit floor space. However, the biggest disadvantage of a studio apartment is the fact that it is often much smaller than a one bedroom, and the fact that is often does not have privacy in case when one is entertaining or has guests over. This is because the living room doubles as the sleeping area. Still, one can put up partial walls or partitions to separate area, i.e. sleeping areas from the living or dining area.

Furthermore, the kitchen in the studio apartments is part of the central room and is often just divided by a counter. This kitchen is very small and may not have space for all the usual appliances, just a refrigerator and a microwave, in addition to the stove. Whereas, a one bedroom has a proper kitchen, a living room, and a whole closed off bedroom separate from the living room.

Most people tend to prefer one-bedroom apartments over studio, due to its private bedroom, and larger space. However, studio apartments have their own attractiveness, especially for someone who is living on a budget, to minimalists, to long-distance commuters and/or for people who tend to spend very little time at the apartment and need just the basic amenities.
