Difference between Babysitter and Childminder

Key Difference: Generally, a babysitter is a person who takes care of children on a temporary basis when the parents are not at home. A childminder also takes care of children during the absence of parents. However, they are qualified professionals. Unlike a babysitter, a childminder must complete the government approval process.

It is the responsibility of the parents to take care of their children. However, sometimes they need to be away from their children for various reasons like work, travel, etc. During this time, they need a person who can take the responsibility of their children and ensure that they remain safe. Based on these reasons, the concept of a babysitter or a childminder has evolved. A baby sitter is employed to take care of the children on a temporary basis. A baby sitter is often employed by the people who want someone to take care of their children in their absence.

Babysitting acts as a part time job for many youngsters. They can work as a baby sitter as well as continue their studies or other work. The term supposedly appeared for the first time in 1937. It originated from the action of the caretaker, i.e. sitting, as the caretaker and the baby tend to sit in the same room. A babysitter is employed on an as-needed basis.

A childminder is similar to a babysitter, as a childminder also takes care of children when both the parents are away. However, the main difference occurs in the qualification of both. A babysitter can be any person, specifically youngsters. However, to be a childminder one must be qualified enough to be eligible for this profile.

A childminder has to go through some child-care related courses in order to qualify. Mostly childminders provide childcare in their own home. Therefore, the home of a child minder needs to be inspected properly. It is important to note that casually childminder and babysitter are used interchangeably.
