The A-Class and B-Class are a couple of the more popular classes. The main difference between the A-Class and B-Class is the fact that the cars produced under the A-Class are hatchbacks, whereas the cars produced under the B-Class are multi-purpose vehicles. Hatchbacks are cars that have a rear door that swings upward to provide access to a cargo area. There usually come in a three-door or a five-door configuration. A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), on the other hand, is a type of van, commonly known as a mini-van. The MPV is usually bigger and taller than a sedan, hatchback, or a station wagon.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a small family car. It was first released in 1997. The first generation A-Class (W168) was followed by the second generation model (W169) in 2004. The latest model (W176) was launched in late 2012. The A-Class was originally launched only as a five-door hatchback; however a three-door hatchback was launched as the second generation model. The W169 sat six inches below the five-door W168. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is the entry level model of Mercedes-Benz in the markets that is sold.
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is a compact luxury car. Mercedes-Benz describes the B-Class as a Compact Sports Tourer instead of hatchback or multi-purpose vehicle. The B-Class was originally a larger version of the A-Class and had some of the same engines; however nowadays models with more powerful engines are available. The B-Class even has the same basic suspension system as the A-Class. Like the A-Class, the B-Class is also a front wheel drive vehicle.
