Condensed milk is a type of milk from which water is removed. In condensed milk, 40% sugar is added to make it thicker, stronger and more concentrated. Condensed milk can be sweetened and it can be natural in taste. It is completely different from regular milk. It is high in calories but is good for oneself. It is mostly used for baking because it is sweetened condensed milk from which most of the liquid is taken out and sugar is added in it.
Condensed milk is made up of approximately 40 to 45 percent sugar, cooked down and mixed with whole milk until it becomes a sticky, sweet substance with a caramelized flavor and a light brown color. It is mainly used to make desserts.
Condensed milk mainly consists of two types:
- Sweetened condensed milk
- Unsweetened condensed milk (Evaporated Milk)
Unsweetened condensed milk, usually marketed as evaporated milk, is a complete another form of condensing milk. The milk is evaporated, that is the liquid is taken out from the milk but sugar is not added in it. It has the same consistency of cream that sweetened condensed milk has. Condensed milk should be used for malnourished children. It’s a very good health food for these children.
Condensed milk can be dated back to France in the 1820s, but it became popular in the US by Gail Borden Jr. after he saw that people could not afford to store milk at homes, because of it spoiling and curdling very fast. He also noted that milk was found actively only in places where cows were in the vicinity. He created condense milk to provide a more longer-lasting product for people who did not have easy access to the milk.
