Difference between Nook HD and Nexus 7

Key difference: The Nook HD is a 7-inch tablet e-reader and media player by Barnes & Noble. It is based on the Android platform. The Nexus 7 is a 7-inch tablet computer by Google running Android 4.1 (named Jelly Bean) operating system.

The Nook is an E-Reader from Barnes & Noble. It is based on the Android platform, and supported Android version 1.5, when it was launched. The Nook 1st Edition was first announced in October 2009. It was first available in the Wi-Fi and 3G model, and a Wi-Fi only model was eventually launched.

The Nook 1st Edition included Wi-Fi and AT&T 3G wireless connectivity, a six-inch black-and-white E-Ink display, and a separate, smaller color touchscreen. The touchscreen was the primary input device. It supported arrow buttons on each side of the Nook, which could be used to turn the pages. It can connect to Barnes and Noble's digital store in order to buy and/or download books. The connection could have been either through Wi-Fi or through AT&T's 3G network. However, an active connection to the store in not required for reading the ebooks.

Eventually with the onset of tablets, which have the capability to double as an e-reader, many manufactures upgraded their e-readers to incorporate media support, including color screen, Wi-Fi capabilities, availability of apps, movies, music, etc. Essentially, the traditional e-readers became tablets.

On November 8, 2012, Barnes & Noble launched the Nook HD, which is essentially a 7-inch tablet e-reader and media player. The Nook HD is the successor to the Nook Tablet. The Nook HD is a tablet, whose main purpose is to be an e-reader, and secondarily a media player.

The Nook HD is available in two memory sizes: the 8GB and the 16GB. The memory can be expanded up to 64GB, via a microSD card. The Nook HD is available in two colors: Snow (white) and Smoke (black-grey).

Barnes & Noble used to manufacture the Nook tablets in house, however, in June 2013, Barnes & Noble announced that it will partner with a third party to produce the tablets.

Google has also launched its own line of smartphones based on Android, called the Google Nexus. Each device in the Nexus line is produced via collaboration between Google and a leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner. The Nexus devices in general have an advantage over other devices in that the Android in the Nexus devices is pure. I.e. the Android does not have any manufacturer or wireless carrier modifications to it, such as a custom graphical user interface. The Android also has an unlockable bootloader to allow further development and end-user modification, all of which is usually blocked on other Android smartphones.

The Nexus 7 is a 7-inch tablet computer running Android 4.1 (named Jelly Bean) operating system. It was developed in collaboration with Asus. It was the first tablet in the Google Nexus series and features a 7-inch (180 mm) display, an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core chip, 1 GB of RAM, and 8, 16 or 32 GB of internal storage. The 8 and 16 GB models were Wi-Fi only, and the 8 GB was eventually discontinued. The 32 GB models are both Wi-Fi and 3G compatible.

The Nexus 7 was marketed effectively as an entertainment device. The tablet has been designed with gaming purpose in mind and has received high resolution display and various sensors to make it the ultimate gaming tablet. The tablets has dropped the rear primary cameras in the tablet and instead focus on place a 1-2 MP front-facing camera for video chatting purposes. The company has also eliminated the Camera app, so users will have to download an app from third-party developers from Google Play. According to Techradar, the images from the camera were a little grainy, but video calling was seamless, with no lag during calls. The low price of the Nexus 7 makes it a good and cheap companion.

The information for the detailed table about the two phones has been taken from the Google Nexus website, the Barnes & Noble website, and Gizmag.com.
