Difference between a Domain Name and a Website

Key Difference: A website is a collection of webpages that display content. This content can include text, as well as multimedia content such as images and videos. The domain name is the name where the people can go to access the website. It works like an address that pinpoints to the website.

WebsiteThe internet can be a vast and confusing place, where everyone wants to be a part of it but have no idea how it works. Many people want to create a website or a blog, some because that is what makes them happy, others because they dream of quitting their job and working for themselves. However, there are steps that must be taken.

First things first, a website needs to be made. A website is a collection of webpages that display content. This content can include text, as well as multimedia content such as images and videos. The website can be used to display a variety of content and can be used for various purposes, such as to share information, to connect with people, etc. However, a lot needs to be done in order to create the website in which this content can be displayed.

One first needs to get a domain name and get it registered. The domain name is the name where the people can go to access the website. The website is a place; in order to access this place, one needs the address, which is what the domain name basically is.  The website is stored in a server, which has an IP address. In order to access the website, one would need to use the IP address, for example such as 173.194.70.113. So in order to access the website, one would need to go to 173.194.70.113/~mysite, which is not easy to remember at all. Hence, the website might not get enough visits. However, the website owner can create a domain name to easily access the website, for example, mysite.com. It will lead to the same website, but will be easier to remember. The domain name acts as an address which allows one to find a places, such as a house, rather than telling someone the longitude and latitude of the house.

A domain name is unique to a website, it can lead to only one website and that website only. Once the domain name is registered, no one else can use the same domain name.

Now, the website may have a website name, i.e. something that it called as. This name can be the same as the domain name, or it can be different. However, most website names are the same as the domain names, as it would be confusing to remember two different names, and might confuse the visitors.

Domain NameThe website, itself is a combination of the domain name, the web hosting, as well as the content and it is management. Web hosting is nothing more than space on a server which stores all of the website’s data and information. All of these things go into creating even the simplest website. Think of it in the manner of a house, the domain name is the house address so that people can find it, whereas the house itself is the webhosting, which stores all the files and data, which can be thought of as the objects in the house, such as the furniture and facilities.
