The Cricket World Cup and Champions Trophy are two different cricket tournaments that are held by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The two tournaments are quite similar in many ways, but also differ on certain key aspects.

The Cricket World Cup and Champions Trophy are both cricket tournaments and both are organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Both are played in the One Day International (ODI) method, with one match consisting to two innings, and each inning consisting of 50 overs. Both are also organized every four years.

However, the Cricket World Cup is the older tournament of the two. The first Cricket World Cup was held in 1975, only four years after the ODI format was first played, while the first Champions Trophy was held in 1998. Hence, the Cricket World Cup generally garners more attention than the Champions Trophy, and is considered to be the more important between the two. In fact, the Cricket World Cup is “one of the world's most viewed sporting events and is considered the flagship event of the international cricket calendar by the ICC.”

Also, the Cricket World Cup is a much bigger event as 14 nation teams play in the tournament, while only 8 teams play in the Champions Trophy. As a result, the Champions Trophy is also a very short tournament, usually lasting around 2 weeks. The Cricket World Cup however can last over a month, in order to accommodate all the matches.

In 2013, the ICC announced that the 2013 Champions Trophy will be the last in the series, and that the series will be replaced by a new ICC World Test Championship. However, in 2014, the ICC announced that the World Test Championship will be cancelled and the Champions Trophy will take place in 2017.

The Champions Trophy is held every 4 years and not every 2 (as incorrectly stated above). It was held in 2009, 2013 and 2017. The next one will be held in 2021.
