The only similarity between England and New England are the names. Other than this weird phenomenon, nothing about these two are even alike. Both, England and New England, are places. The term England is very popular as the name of a country, while New England is actually a less popular term. The reason for this is the term New England refers to various different places, including an area of land near England.

When we talk about England, we are talking about the country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares borders Scotland and Wales. The country is surrounded by bodies of water, with the Irish Sea to the North West, the Celtic Sea to the south west, the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight. The area was originally inhabited during the Upper Palaeolithic era, but was not termed England until the 927 A.D., when it was officially united. Since its unification, England has had a large impact on the rest of the world, including multiple nations being established under the English rule. England has become the cultural, legal and religious hub of the nation. It was also the world’s industrialized nation.

Now, we know that the British Empire became a strong influence during the 16^th and 17^th century. It has also established many colonies, some of which became nations. The story of Christopher Columbus and his search of “India”, when he stumbled upon the United States is popular and well known. After the said discover, the British Empire established colonies on that soil. The empire established 13 colonies along on the east coast, which were termed as the 13 original colonies. They later spread to the west during the Gold Rush and became states. Now, before these 13 colonies were established, when the Pilgrims first arrived from England, they settled in the northeast corner of the United States. The, then northwest corner, now consists of the six states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. They named this area as New England, in honor of the place they have just left behind.

Some of the first movements of American literature, philosophy, and education originated in New England. The region played a prominent role in the movement to abolish slavery, and was the first region of the United States transformed by the Industrial Revolution. Today, New England is a major world center of education, high technology, insurance, and medicine. Boston is its cultural, financial, educational, medical, and transportation center. Although, these are now states, the name New England has informally stuck and is sometimes used to refer to the general area.

The term New England does not stop there, it also refers to different locations. There is a New England Island, which is an uninhabited island off the shore of Essex, England. New England is an area in Peterborough in England. Nieuw Engeland is a district of Rotterdam, Netherlands. New England is also the names of two different towns, one in North Dakota and one in Ohio. Lastly, it also refers to an area in Australia.
