With the advent of social media, everybody wanted to get into the trends. This of course included various companies. There used to be MySpace, then can Facebook and Twitter. There is also LinkedIn for professionals. Hence, it is only acceptable that Google which has its hand in almost all types of technology would also want to get into social media. Even if they don’t use it, most people have heard of Gooogle’s social media site, which is aptly named Google+.
Fun fact, Google+ is not Google’s first foray into social media. It has launched Orkut, a site similar to MySpace. While it gained some popularity in certain markets, it did not gain the traction that Google was hoping for. Eventually the service was discontinued.
Like any business, Google has diversified its Google+ product line. Similar to how Facebook has Facebook pages, Google+ has the Google+ Profile, Google+ Page and Google+ Local Q. All three are similar but work in different manners and have different purposes and target audience.
Google+ Profile is the basic Google+ account. This is the profile that any individual makes similar to how they would make a Facebook account or a Twitter Account. A person can use this to share information and posts, connect with other people on the social media website, etc. Hence it is just a regular person writing content and sharing information with their followers on Google+.
While a Google+ Profile is for individual use only, Google+ Page and Google+ Local Q are intended for use by businesses. The Google+ Page is a page that is created for a business so that it would have a place to interact with its fans and followers. People can follow a Google+ Page and keep abreast of any updates or announcement that the company, brand or business makes.
Google+ Local Q is very similar to a Google+ Page, it is also a page that is created for a company, brand or business where fans and followers can interact with the brand and keep updated with their news and information. However, Local Q is different in the sense that the pages are optimized for local searches. This is great for smaller businesses or restaurants who would like to cater and connect to followers in a particular area or locations where they do business rather than from people all over the world. Additionally, Local Q also syncs with Google Maps, hence showing the location of the business on the Map, so that people can easily find them. This is somewhat similar to Yelp, however, due to Google interaction, Google+ Local Q tends to have a lot more features and integration.
It should be noted that like with most social media websites, one needs a Google+ Profile in order to make a Google+ Page or a Google+ Local Q. This is used to verify that the businesses are legitimate and to hold someone personally accountable. The Google+ Profile holder acts as an admin for the other two, and is liable for the Google+ Page or Google+ Local Q linked to their account.
