The main competition is based on beauty, but will also include aspects of personality, intelligence, talent, and answers to judges' questions. The judges will judge the contestants on this basis and will announce a winner at the end.

Depending on the pageant, the winner will get a crown, the title of the pageant and might get a monetary award or a scholarship. The Beauty Pageant usually occurs on a annul basis. The two most famous pageants are the Miss World pageant and the Miss Universe pageant. Each country or brand may have their own pageant. Children's beauty pageants are also growing in popularity.

A Beauty Pageant contestant might aspire to be a Fashion Show model, and might even get a chance to be once she is discovered on the pageant. However, a Fashion Show model will rarely want to or will enter a Beauty Pageant as she has already made a career out of her beauty. She needs not win a competition to prove that she is beautiful.
